Follow these tips to keep yourself hydrated this summer!

Those landscaping projects you’re taking on this summer are tough! From weeding your garden, to lifting heavy boards for your new deck outdoor work will have you sweating. Don’t get too carried away. The risk for dehydration increases drastically alongside the heat index. If your mouth starts to feel dry and sticky, you start feeling lethargic, and develop a headache, it’s time to get out of the sun. Severe dehydration is extremely detrimental to your health. Fever, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, confusion, and decreased urination are notables signs of advanced dehydration. If you don’t seek medical attention immediately, you risk your life. Follow these helpful tips to stay hydrated this summer and avoid an emergency.

Start Working Early

The hottest time of day in Maryland is from 3 pm to 4:30 pm every afternoon. To avoid the risk of dehydration, it’s best to start your outdoor pruning early. The air outside is much cooler and the sun is far less blaring in the morning. Wake up at 7 am and get that lawn mown in time for lunch! Does your deck need power washing? Slap on those sandals and get that strenuous work out of the way while there’s a cool breeze flowing through the air.

Drink A Lot Of Water

Drink plenty of fluids and ingest fruits and vegetables with high water concentrations. While doing yard work, you should always have a water bottle by your side. Cut up some watermelon to snack on while trimming up those gnarly branches. Just remember, the more you exert yourself, the more fluids your body loses through the sweat glands. If you’re doing really strenuous work involving a lot of heavy-lifting, you need to take into account how much more water you’ll need. The more fluids you lose from sweat glands, the more water you’ll need to be drinking.

Take Breaks Often

If you’re starting to feel dizzy, confused, or lethargic it’s time to take a break.  Between strenuous activity make sure to take 15 minutes to sit down, rehydrate and cool off. Seek refuge in the shade! If you are working on a big landscaping project, consider planting umbrellaed, leafy canopies throughout your backyard. Set up a sitting area to unwind between yard work. Keep your health central to outdoor living this summer by avoiding dehydration.
