Ready your spring garden!
Many Maryland residents walked outside this week to find a fresh layer of yellow pollen on their front lawns. Spring is officially here and the growing pains that come with it. As you head out to purchase allergy medicine, stop and pick up a few lawn-care tools as well. Now is the perfect time to prepare your garden for spring. Here’s how you can start.
Clean The Area
Even if you prepared your landscape during the fall, the winter weather most likely caused damage to your lawn and garden beds. Pick up all of the branches that may have fallen and clear the lawn of any other debris that built up over the winter months.
Plant New Flowers/ Vegetables
If you plan on planting new grass seed or installing sod, apply a balanced organic fertilizer in these areas. This will allow for the grass to grow to its greatest potential. For all plants and garden vegetables, ensure that the soil is in the best condition for planting. You can purchase a soil testing kit from your local hardware store to determine if it’s the best time to plant.
In order to improve the soil structure and promote deeper root growth, add a compost to the soil after you’ve finished planting.
Mulch
Reduce the number weeds that grow by applying a 4-inch layer of fresh mulch over the beds. Take some time to hand pull any weeds that have already started to pop up. Opt for a natural non-selective weed control solution to remove weeds, such as a vinegar-based product. Make sure that you don’t spray anything you recently planted.
